Yeo Oh-hyun and Han Song-yi who took off their uniforms after making a mark on Korean volleyball
"It was a dreamy time."
Former Hyundai Capital playing coach Libero Yeo Oh-hyun (46), who has made a mark in Korean volleyball, has ended his career and opened the second act of his life. He will serve as the senior coach at the women's IBK Industrial Bank of the V-League, where Kim Ho-chul, his former teacher, is at the helm of Hyundai Capital. IBK Industrial Bank said on its official social media on the 26th, "Coach Yeo will be with IBK Industrial Bank." Hyundai Capital also said, "I will end my time with Coach Yeo, who has always been firmly behind me. I will support Coach Yeo's new start in her second life."
Coach Yeo was literally a living legend. After moving through Daejeon Jungang High School and Hongik University, he played 625 games during the 20 seasons from 2005 season to 2023-2024, the first year of the V-League's launch. The 600-game trip is the first time for both men's and women's teams, and a record held by only a female coach. Ha Hyun-yong (577 games for Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance), Park Cheol-woo (564 games for Korea Electric Power Corporation), and Im Myeong-ok (559 games for Korea Expressway Corporation). In addition, his career was spectacular. He topped the regular league five times at Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance (2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2009-2010, 2011-2012, 2012-2013 season) and two times at Hyundai Capital (2015-2016 and 2017-2018 seasons).
He has always shown consistent performance. He has 8005 receptions (66.107 percent receiving efficiency) and 5,219 digs (2.393 receptions per set). Starting with the Libero Award in the 2005 season, he also received three defensive awards (2005-2006, 2006-2007 and 2009-2010 seasons), and the All-Star Most Valuable Player (2013-2014 seasons) and two best seven (2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons). Choi Tae-woong, former coach of Hyundai Capital, said, "(Coach) is a walking history in the volleyball world."
In the women's team, Han Song-yi (40), another legendary middle blocker, took off her uniform. Han Song-yi announced her retirement plan through her club on Tuesday. "The Song leader, Han Song-yi, will retire from the team," Jeonggwan said. "He will hold a retirement ceremony with fans at the opening game of the 2024-2025 season."
Han Song-yi, who graduated from Hanil Computer Girls' High School, joined the Korea Expressway Corporation in 2002 as the first overall pick of the rookie draft, and played 20 seasons from the start of the professional league in 2005 to the 2023-2024 season. Since the introduction of the foreign player system, he was the only Korean player to win the top scorer's title (2007-2008 season), and after joining the KGC Ginseng Corporation (currently Jeonggwanjang) in 2017, he changed his position and was selected as the best seven for two consecutive seasons (2019-2020, 2020-2021 season). "After a brilliant career, there was consistency and sincerity," Jeong Kwan-jang said. "He is the only female player in the V League who has played all 20 seasons from his first professional year."
"It was like a dream," Han Song-yi said. "I was happy with the undue love I received from the presidential office over the past seven years. I was able to enjoy my career thanks to my beloved family and fans who always supported me. I will greet my fans again in a good way."
